He very much influenced some of country music's earliest talent. Including Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson & Keith Whitley.

I found this 45 today when I was at Extreme Noise here in Minneapolis with a friend. They had boxes upon boxes of old 45's that they were selling for $1 each and if you bought 3 you got charged for the price of 2. Let's just say I walked out with a handful. So more entry's will be done.

What I like most about this song is the lyric "I have been in the arms of my best friends wife". So good.

Label: Columbia Records
Year: 1959
Format: 45RPM
Cat. #: 4-41384

Tracklist:
Side A:
1. I found this 45 last summer when I was record shopping with an ex. She was actually the one that pointed it out because she knew how much I loved Phil Elverum/Mount Eerie/The Microphones. I checked it out and noticed it was a split with a group called "Love of Everything" (not to be confused with Love As Laughter). I took it home and decided to surprise myself with the b-side of the record and out came this very lo-fi gem. I also found out that it is one person in Love of Everything and not a band.

Anyways, this is a decent split. With a bedroom recording on one side and another side recorded in a church. Too bad you will not be able to get one because these have been out of print for some time, but hey. Ya never know.

Label: Record Label
Year: 2005
Format: 45RPM (White Vinyl)
Cat. #: RL 13

Tracklist:
Side A:
1. This 45 also came in the "grab bag" that my old roommate gave me. My favorite track on here is "Runaround". Songs about love, the lack of love and adoration, music isn't really made like this anymore and that in turn kind of makes me sad, frustrated and annoyed. They were mainly known for there single "Come Softly to Me" which was played in the 1986 film "Stand by Me". He purchased a grab bag at Treehouse for $2 and got a bunch of 45's that he didn't really enjoy so he gave them to me at no charge. Anyways, This record is pretty amazing. You might recognize those guys from the magazine called "Horizontal Action" but they also release great 45's in small pressings that sell out very, very fast. Some times within days. Almost everything HoZac has put out I have tried to get my hands on. Check out: Catatonic Youth, Medication, NoBunny and Art Thieves. The album is titled The End... on the cover. It was her fourth release, as well as her fifth collaboration with John Cale and third with him as producer. The album was her darkest, most caustic work yet. It carried the same organic, harmonium-based gothic music heard on The Marble Index and Desertshore, but went one step further with the addition of Brian Eno's synthesizers and electronics. The mix of Nico's gloomy, hypnotic melodies and Eno's synthetic droning, as heard on "Innocent and Vain", produced an atmosphere of brooding apocalyptic destruction. Other songs that aren't as violently dramatic have a lingering distortion to them. "You Forgot To Answer" tells of the misery felt when she failed to reach ex-lover Jim Morrison by phone only to find out later that he had died. It's a simple mix of her vocals, Phil Manzanera's guitar, Cale's piano and Eno's synthesizer death-moans. The sound conjures up the Weimar Republic, with melodies reminiscent of Kurt Weill and angular, distorted electronics symbolic of Expressionism.

All but two of the songs on the album were written by Nico: a cover of the Doors' "The End" and the German national anthem "Das Lied der Deutschen", sung as a form of protest in behalf of terrorist Andreas Baader. Her interpretation of the national song which has been considered by some critics as the most significant interpretation of a patriotic anthem since Hendrix's performance in Woodstock, 1969. In retrospect, The End is a precursor to acts such as early Death In June and subsequently the neofolk movement, that blend European folk and classical with cutting-edge electronic experimentation.

The front and back covers feature stills from the Philippe Garrel film, Les hautes solitudes (1974), which Nico appeared in.

Label: Island Records
Year: 1974
Format: 12"
Cat. #: ILPS 9311

Tracklist:
Side A:
1. It contains some live versions of her most known songs.

I got this import from a guy that comes into my work. We got to talking about Nico and TVU and he mentioned he had some records I might be interested in. He also sold me a bunch of rare/original Joy Divison albums and the original "The End" album from Nico that was released on Island Records.

This album was also produced by Martin Hannett, you know the crazy fat guy that did the Joy Divison albums and made them the "spacey, haunting" band they were.

Very rare record right here.

Label: 1/2 Records
Year: 1982
Format: 12"
Cat. #: 1/2 REC 112

Tracklist:
Side A:
1. It was the follow up to there 1996 album "Don't Tell Me Now" but will never replace there "God Don't Make No Junk" album.

The Halo Benders' music is characterised by untraditional sounds, movements, and song structures. Additionally, the vocals of the baritone Johnson and the pitchy Martsch overlap often, even though often entirely unrelated. Johnson has said that the two write lyrics for songs largely independently.

This will never replace there first album but is still very hard to find on vinyl. I believe that last one I saw for sale online was for $40. Luckily my trusty record store, Treehouse Records had a copy for only $12 and it is great condition. Most of them were taking place in the International Pop Underground Convention which was spearheaded by K Records own, Calvin Johnson. This 2xLP compilation was an exciting find and very cheap (considering how much people will sell it on eBay for). All the tracks on the compilation were recorded live at the Capitol Theater, North Shore Surf Club and Capital Lake Park. Favorite tracks on this compilation are The Spinnanes and Courtney Love. It was before she was in HOLE. After giving it a listen on the Elizabeth Mitchell side I was kind of disappointed, her voice really doesn't carry any other tune then something that sounds like it would come out of musical.

Now the Fred Thomas side isn't half bad, but I expected a little better. And I don't understand why he just didn't name the title of the song in english. This is the first musical release from the actress Jena Malone, you may have known about her in Saved!, Donnie Darko, and other movies. She now resides in New York City and plays venues under the moniker, "Jena Malone & Her Bloodstains". A lot of people compare her music to that of PJ Harvey, and a lot of people give her grief cause they think it is another actress/singer gimic. But trust me, Jena has some things to say and I am all for it. She is suppose to be releasing an album sometime soon, but she keeps pretty low-key so you never know.

This is also the first release from The Social Club. The Social Club is a music club that was started up by The Social Registry in 2007, basically it is like those old mail-ordered type of deals. You send them like $30 and they send you 6, letter stamped, hand numbered in editions of 750 seven inches from ranging artists. Most of these artists I have never heard about before finding out about this club. Lucky for me my local record store carries these hand numbered 7"s and noone ever buys them. The Social Registry is possibly one of the best record labels out right now.

The 7" I own is #116 out of 750

www.myspace.com/OFWILDANIMALS (Jena Malone's myspace for her music)

Label : The Social Registry
Year : 2007
Format : 7"
Cat. # : TSR038

Tracklist:
Side A:
1. Coincidentally it is also the debut release from new outlet "Of The Manner, Of The Manor" which is run by TSR compatriot Matt Damhave."

This pressing was done in a quantity of 1,000.

The covers/inserts are pages from Theodor Adorno's Minima Moralia.

These songs were written by & recorded by Ben Crook of Sian Alice Group.

This 45 RPM single contains two tracks of some interesting electronica, and not the rave or dancing type. Very spacey & haunting in a way, reminiscent of Portishead with the ever distance sounding vocals and the glitches and expiermentalism of My Bloody Valentine. Not to mention the name is hard to read if you don't know how to spell it. I found this 7" used a month ago and enjoy the soft sounds that this little piece of plastic sends out into my room. Not to mention that this release was made in a limited edition of 500 copies and the screen printing is beautiful. Perfect for a very eerie night.

This split seven inch is available on the bands myspace for like $4 which I posted a link to below. Let the sound resonate.
You can also buy their first full length release "The Patron" at the Kranky Records website, I recommened it.

www.myspace.com/TOKILLAPETTYBOURGEOISIE
www.KRANKY.net

Label: The Riley Bushman Recordings & Archives
Year : 2006
Format : 7"
Cat. # : TRBRA001

Tracklist:
Side A:
1. Cristal - Lahaie

Side B:
1. To Kill Petty Bourgeoisie - Venture Dearly

MAULED BY TIGERS - THIS WAS SUPPOSE TO BE A CELEBRATION!

Mauled By Tigers - This Was Suppose to be a Celebration! (2007)

Mauled by Tigers is a music festival that is held in Chicago, IL from July 19th to the 22nd. Last year they decided to put out a compilation album that features bands that play on the festival. Great thing about this compilation is that it showcases many, many different genres of music and most of the tracks are unreleased or at the time of vinyl pressing were unreleased. Not to mention the slick pink marble of the actual vinyl. They sell these online for about $5-$7 at the Mauled by Tigers website and the Chicago based label Do the Math Records. I included the links at the bottom of the page incase any of you wanted to check it out.

This compilation also holds some music from some of my favorite bands like Japanther, Matt & Kim, The Bananas, Parts & Labor, Latterman, Tulsa, Shopping, etc. But since buying this record I have come to love the track by the band called Bossy. The track is called "Walk Around" and I have been trying to find other stuff by these guys from New York but have come up with nothing. So if you get a chance, check out some of these bands. Most have myspaces so there you go.

www.MAULEDBYTIGERS.com
www.DOTHEMATHRECORDS.com

Label : Do the Match Records
Year : 2007
Format : 12"
Cat. # : DTM=04

Tracklist:
Side A:
1. Underground Railroad to Candyland - Paint Thin Walls**
2. Canadian Rifle - Follow the Leader*
3. King Tuff - Ruthie Ruthie*
4. Japanther - The Sun Goes Down*
5. Maps and Atlases - The Most Trustworthy Tin Cans
6. Theka-nives - Katobi Rock & Roll
7. Kit - Stars
8. Latterman - If Batman Was Real, He Would've Beaten the Crap Out of My Friends
9. Matt & Kim - Jesse Jane*
10. Ultra Dolphins - If You Will

Side B:
1. Lone Wolf & Cub - Shut the Fuck Up Rory Brown**
2. Punkin Pie - One Month Later*
3. The Hunchback - All That Fear Allows
4. Parts and Labor - ?**
5. Shopping - Invulnerable to Cure
6. Tulsa - Young and Foolish
7. Bossy - Walk Around
8. Dynamite Arrows - Lady, I'm Fucking Dead**
9. Pterodactyl - Ask Me Nicely**
10. Rager - Been Signing Tits Since '86*
11. TheDeathSet - Had a Bird**
12. The Bananas - New Animals**

* UNRELEASED
** AS YET UNRELEASED

MAN MAN - SIX DEMON BAG

MAN MAN - Six Demon Bag (2006)

I stumbled upon MAN MAN in the summer of 2006 while listening to some online radio station when I lived in Texas. The song that played was "Black Mission Goggles" and ever since then I have been fixated with this band from Philly. This is by far the only known MAN MAN release on vinyl (that I know of), it was released in a limited edition of 1,000 copies and contains two 10" picture disk's in gatefold packaging. The artwork alone is pretty fucking good, but you gotta listen to the music of this album. It is a mix of circus type horns, drunken yelling and maybe a bar fight all ran up in one. Honus Honus really knows how to get to me.

Label : Tonearm & Free News Projects
Year : 2006
Format : 2x10"
Cat. # : N/A

Tracklist:
Side 1:
1. The most notable album from Gang of Four was Entertainment! which was originally released in 1979 by EMI. The follow up to that album was Solid Gold which was then picked up by Warner Bros. Records in 1981. I found this promotional copy of Sold Gold at a record show here in Minneapolis they pull off at least once every two months. The tag only said $6 and I snatched it right away without every really looking and noticing it was a "Promotional Copy". I have no idea if this makes it more sought after or makes it not so sought after. But you can't go wrong with the artwork of a beheading on the back and a quote saying "I hope they keep down the price of gas." And let me remind you, this was in 1981.

Label : Warner Bros. The price sticker was $5 but totally worth it. I believe I got all kinds of giddy when I ran my fingers across it. I believe anyone that was into "twee/indie pop" in the early 90's knows who Beat Happening is. The male vocalist of the band is Calvin Johnson who owns the very influential indie label K Records. He also just released a new record called "Calvin Johnson & the Sons of the Soil" and I saw them live with Julie Doiron at First Amendment in Northeast in July of '07. The tracks on this 45 are Nancy Sin which are sung by Calvin Johnson and his very deep, brooding voice with heavy breathing included. The back side "Left Behind" is one of my favorite BH songs, sung by Heather Lewis. The 45 was released in a limited edition of 3,500 "sleeveless promos". Meaning that there was no artwork or anything involved, just the 45 in a paper sleeve. It was released for the promotion of the bands 4th album "Dreamy"

Label : Sub Pop Records
Year : 1991
Format : 45 RPM
Cat. # : SP2000

Tracklist
Side A:
1.
